    Experienced diplomat in the region appointed UK ambassador to Uruguay

    Ambassador Green was Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General  y Santiago and Buenos Aires between 2013 and 2018

    The British Government announced Mr. Malcolm Christopher David Green as the next Ambassador to Uruguay. Malcolm Green will arrive in Montevideo in August, replacing Ambassador Ms. Faye O'Connor OBE, who will take up a new post at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in London.

    Despite Argentina's thumbs down together with eight other countries, the United Nations (UN) decided on Friday by 143 votes in favor and 25 abstentions to upgrade Palestine's status within the organization to that of a full membership, it was reported in New York. In 2012, Palestine had been admitted as an Observer State with 138 votes in and also 9 against.

Gordon Institute for Public Policy together with the Taeda Foundation that China's growing influence in building critical infrastructure in Latin America had raised security concerns. In addition, the region hardly benefits “from the resources that China extracts,” the four-star general stressed.

    Bank of England keeps rate at 5,25%; March inflation 3,2%, but services remain high, 6%

    Twelve-month CPI inflation fell to 3.2% in March from 3.4% in February. CPI inflation is expected to return to close to the 2% target in the near term

    The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) at its meeting ending on 8 May 2024, voted by a majority of 7–2 to maintain Bank Rate at 5.25%. Two members preferred to reduce Bank Rate by 0.25 percentage points, to 5%.

    India will host significant Antarctica research and environmental meetings

    India’s first Antarctic research station, Dakshin Gangotri, was established in 1983. At present, India operates two year-round research stations: Maitri (1989) and Bharati (2012).

    India through the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), will host the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 46) and the 26th Meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP 26) from May 20 to 30, 2024, in Kochi, Kerala. This is in line with India’s poise to facilitate constructive global dialogue on environmental stewardship, scientific collaboration, and cooperation in Antarctica.

    Paraguay will have a new UK Ambassador; Navai reappointed to El Salvador

    Ms Danielle Dunne has been appointed His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Paraguay in succession to Mr Ramin Navai who will be transferring to another Diplomatic Service appointment in El Salvador. Ms Dunne will take up her appointment during January 2025.

    Commonwealth Games confident on a host; Birmingham 2022, “complete success for UK economy”

    CGF President, Chris Jenkins OBE, said: “Birmingham 2022 was a spectacular, record-breaking Games that created iconic moments on and off the field, uniting the Commonwealth through sport.”

    The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has confirmed that it is considering multiple proposals to Host the 2026 Games, so it was announced following the April meeting of the Executive Board, with confirmation by the end of the month.
